Surgery

Dr. Jeff Hogans and the veterinarians at Harden Ranch Veterinary Hospital are proud to offer the most advanced surgical techniques and technology. Before surgery, a complete physical examination and pre-anesthetic laboratory testing are performed on all patients to carefully screen for any underlying medical problems. Anesthetics are specifically tailored to each pet. Our surgery suite is temperature-controlled and has an advanced HEPA filter for the control of micro-organisms. We have an advanced warming system to maintain patient body temperature at all times. We have a state-of-the-art anesthetic monitor and our nurses and doctors are highly trained in anesthetic safety. We also have a ventilator for respiratory support when necessary. After surgery, our patients wake up in our ICU unit under the direct supervision of attentive nursing staff and doctors.
Advanced Laser Surgery
Veterinary laser surgery is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery. In many procedures, lasers replace scalpels and are useful for a wide range of conditions such as cyst, tumor, and wart removal, and can even be used in declawing. Laser procedures result in less pain, less bleeding and less swelling. They reduce risk of infection and result in less post-operative discomfort. Harden Ranch Veterinary Hospital is one of the few hospitals in the Salinas and Monterey region to offer laser surgery.
Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic spay is a minimally invasive surgical technique whereby the ovaries and/or uterus are removed through two very small holes about the size of a pencil. This technique offers patients less pain and reduced recovery times. The procedure can safely be performed as an outpatient surgery, a less stressful alternative for patient and owner. The laparoscopic spay is simple to perform, involves few complications and allows for better visualization of abdominal organs. The laparoscopic spay truly is a humane and practical alternative to the traditional surgical spay. Harden Ranch Veterinary Hospital is one of the few hospitals in the Salinas and Monterey region to offer laparoscopic surgery. Read more about a laparoscopic spay procedure. Emergency Services
If an emergency arises outside regular hospital hours, we refer pets with urgent medical needs to the Monterey Peninsula Salinas Veterinary Emergency Clinic for care:

Monterey, CA 93940
Phone: 831-373-7374
Hours: 5:30 p.m. - 8 a.m.
Patients needing ongoing care after discharge from the emergency clinic may be transferred back to Harden Ranch Veterinary Hospital for continued care. Patients that are cleared to go home from the emergency clinic may need follow-up visits at our office. Your discharge paperwork should detail when these follow-up visits are recommended. The cost of follow-up visits at Harden Ranch Veterinary Hospital is not covered in the fees charged by the emergency clinic.
Veterinary Specialists
Sometimes conditions arise that require veterinarians with specialized training. We are fortunate to have excellent veterinary specialists in our area. There are times when your veterinarian at Harden Ranch Veterinary Hospital may refer your pet to a board-certified veterinary cardiologist, surgeon, dermatologist, oncologist, neurologist and ophthalmologist for a second opinion or other specialized care. These specialists communicate regularly with our veterinarians to keep them informed on your pet's progress. Follow-up tests and medication refills are most often done through our office. Wellness care and immunizations are still be provided through our hospital, as the referral veterinarians provide only specialty services and not routine care.
Blood Transfusions
We maintain a small supply of blood for cats and dogs in case of emergency. The blood is obtained from the Animal Blood Bank in Dixon, Ca., or is sometimes collected from the personal pets of hospital employees. All blood is carefully pre-screened for disease.
